March 11, 2014

Good morning folks,

How much does it cost to rent the Senate floor (and 30 United States Senators) for 24 hours? By the looks of it, more than $100 million.  Last night, the majority of Democrats engaged in a so-called, "talk-a-thon" to protest climate change and advocate for policies that hurt American energy development.  Yes, this is the same Democrat majority that has controlled Washington since 2009.

As the Los Angeles Times reports, "There has been little talk of legislation to tackle climate change in Congress since 2010, when a bill to reduce carbon emissions died in the Senate. But as they rev up for the midterm elections, Democrats are heeding the call of California billionaire Tom Steyer, who has pledged $100 million to back candidates with a program to curb climate change."  The Washington Post is even more blunt:  "...There is another more political reason for the decision by Senate Democrats to devote their time to the issue right now. And that issue is campaign cash.  Environmental groups spent about $20 million on ads and other activities to help Democrats in 2012 and gave about $742,000 directly to candidates during the cycle... Then there's the billionaire businessman Thomas Steyer. ...Steyer hosted a recent fundraiser at his San Francisco home that netted the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee $400,000 and where Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) and the six other Democratic senators in attendance openly discussed plans for tonight's talkathon, according to reports."

$100 billion for just about 15 hours, or $6 million per hour.  To accomplish.... nothing.  As USA Today lamented"The Democratic effort is cause for some confusion because these senators are calling for action in a chamber they control but without any specific legislation to offer up for a vote, or any timetable for action this year."

The problem for Senate Democrats is that being beholden to extremists exposes another vulnerability for Senators already in danger of losing their seat like Mark Udall, Mark Begich, Kay Hagan, Mark Warner, Mark Pryor, Jeanne Shaheen and especially newly named Energy & Natural Resources Chair Mary Landrieu. The Democrats' talk-a-thon makes clear that Landrieu is the Chair in name only, and instead is beholden to whatever Harry Reid wants. Mary Landrieu always brags about being a committee chairman – we all know she talks a good game, problem is - Mary Landrieu just never delivers results.

This morning, the NRSC released a new paid web ad that shows Landrieu's new post is as much as a vulnerability as it is a benefit in 2014 because it cements the fact that she is a rubberstamp for the Obama/Reid/Steyer anti-energy agenda.

Look, we get it - Democrats are desperate.  They are desperately trying to motivate their base and resorting to extreme measures and gimmicks like the "talk-a-thon" to appease their special interest friends.  The problem is that by doing so, they put their most vulnerable Senators in even greater jeopardy. Then again, perhaps they've already written off Louisiana.

2014 BATTLEGROUND SONAR

(2014) Another Look at Dems' Chances of Losing the Senate
But because we’ve also downgraded Obama’s chances of scoring an unusually high job approval by using only data from his second term, the overall probabilities using randomized job approval scores look a lot like they did before: Republicans win the Senate about 80 percent of the time, they gain seven-to-nine seats about 45 percent of the time, more than that 25 percent of the time, and less than that 30 percent of the time. But here’s the important thing: All the modelers seem to agree that the Democrats’ Senate majority is in real trouble, and that they may even be underdogs in their quest to keep it. The current polling certainly bears out this view, with Democrats behind in seven seats, below 45 percent in three seats, and below 50 percent in another three

(2014) Senate Democrats' donor-friendly global warming show
On Monday night into Tuesday morning, two dozen Senate Democrats -- members of the party's newly-formed Climate Action Task Force -- plan to hold an all-night, filibuster-like talkathon on the issue of global warming. "Congress must act," Hawaii Democratic Sen. Brian Schatz, a leader of the group, said in a statement. "On Monday night we're going to show the growing number of senators who are committed to working together to confront climate change."

(COLORADO) Dead heat in Colorado Senate race
The race for the Colorado Senate seat is a dead heat between sitting Democratic Sen. Mark Udall and Republican Rep. Cory Gardner, who made a late entry in the race, according to a poll released Monday. The poll, from Rasmussen Reports, found Udall and Gardner locked in a tie, 42 percent to 41 percent, a difference that sits within the margin of error.

(LOUISIANA) SITE HITS LANDRIEU, PAC ON KEYSTONE XL
The nonpartisan 501(c)(4) group Keep Louisiana Working is out with a new site criticizing Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu for backing candidates who oppose the Keystone XL pipeline. The site, "Krewe of Landrieu," uses a Mardi Gras term to refer to the senators endorsed by JAZZ PAC, Landrieu's PAC. It features pictures of each senator and the amount of money Landrieu's PAC donated to them, in addition to quotes from each pol about his or her opposition to Keystone. Landrieu herself has advocated for construction of the pipeline. See the site: http://goo.gl/dM4oOC

(KENTUCKY) Alison Lundergan Grimes Unclear on Supporting Senate Democrats Climate Change 'Talk-a-Thon'
A majority of Democrats are planning to takeover the Senate floor to bring attention to climate change in a so-called "talk-a-thon" Monday. It's unclear if Kentucky candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes either supports or would participate in the event. But a prominent environmentalist says the campaign is promising Grimes will be more aggressive in fighting for a green agenda after the election.

(ALASKA) Begich Still Flailing & Failing to Explain Doublespeak on Harmful Energy Tax
Senator Mark Begich (D-AK) finds himself on the defensive yet again, launching his first television ad of the 2014 cycle desperately trying to explain his contradictory record on an energy tax that would hurt Alaska. Begich's new ad is even more ironic, considering the fact that he has taken $5,000 from the group he is now attacking.

POLLING BRIEF

Rasmussen Reports - March 6th-7th

  • President Obama’s proposed new $3.9 trillion federal budget includes $55 billion in new spending for fiscal 2015, but one-out-of-two voters think the Obama administration has already raised spending too much.
  • A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just over half (52%) of Likely U.S. Voters correctly recognize that government spending will keep going up under the president’s new budget plan.
  • Thirteen percent (13%) think Obama’s new budget proposal will reduce spending, while 24% believe it will keep spending about the same. Eleven percent (11%) are not sure.
